The signs of ill health or a potential problem are the opposite of the above.

You should not be asked what a horse’s normal temperature, pulse and respiration are, but it is useful to know:

Temperature: 38 °Celsius (100.5 °Fahrenheit)

Pulse (at rest): 36–42 beats per minute

Respiration (at rest): 8–12 beats per minute

If a horse in your care appears to show any abnormal signs, as an assistant in the yard it is your job to report this immediately to a senior member of staff so they can review the situation and call a vet if necessary. The sooner a problem is spotted and dealt with, the less likely a horse is to become seriously ill.

It is important to check your horse last thing at night. If you finish the yard at about seven o’clock at night then, if he is not checked again until seven o’clock the next morning, that is a twelve-hour gap when anything could happen. If possible, horses should be checked as late as possible so that there is less time for a problem to occur
